Essay Instructions:  You are to write a comparison/contrast essay where you discuss “two worlds” in which you find or have found yourself. Perhaps you are a student by day and store manager by night. Maybe you are a parent at home and then go to the world of work. Maybe you used to live elsewhere and now find yourself in Arizona. Whatever worlds you have experienced, you have probably met with  difficulties and joys in each.

Your essay must include:

A strong introduction and thesis. By the end of your introduction, the reader should know what point you are trying to make.

B.      A middle section that shows that you understand how to effectively compare and contrast. Use either the point-by-point or the item-by-item organizational pattern. (This is longer than a paragraph!)

C.   A powerful conclusion.

D.    Correct use of MLA formatting.

You may have the draft ready when you enter the class and finish the paper during the exam time. Or, you may have the paper finished, submit it, complete the rest of the exam, and leave. Either way, you must come to class on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 11:00 am. Note that this is 30 minutes earlier than we usually meet.  We will be in our regular classroom.

The essay counts as 90% of the exam. The EMCC writing rubric will be used to score your essay.

There will also be a short grammar, usage, and mechanics section for you to complete during the exam time. Concentrate on learning to fix run-on sentences, comma splices, and fragments. Also, review the commonly confused words we have addressed.

To/too/two
Its/it’s

Here/hear

There/their/they’re

Your/you’re/yore

Also, review the rules for punctuating titles. Know when to underline and when to use quotation marks. Review the capitalization rules for titles in MLA format as well.
